Established in November 2020. Solar Power Relief (SPR) came into being as a result of personal experience, discussions and study about the harmful effects of fossil fuels on health.
In addition to the health conditions burning fossil fuels lead to for those directly in the vicinity of their use, the cumulative effect of millions of people around the world using such fuel for lighting also increases environmental pollution, thus resulting in a wider undesirable impact.
Portable, easy to use and cost effective. Solar powered lanterns provide a remedy to the ills highlighted above. From the standpoint of poverty reduction, the additional upside of yielding an economic benefit for owners who use their lanterns as their principal lighting source instead of expending income on fossil fuels is also welcome.
Through provision of solar powered lanterns SPR is committed to addressing the challenges faced by the rural and urban poor in the developing world, who have no choice other than to use fossil fuel sources for lighting,
To impact profoundly on the welfare of the resource poor in the developing world by providing far greater access to solar-powered lanterns in tandem with contributing to a reduction in fossil fuel emissions.
Reducing the negative environmental, health and financial impact of fuel based/hazardous lighting through widespread provision of solar-powered lanterns.
We will achieve this mission through developing local partnerships, networks or volunteers in each country we are working in, thereby making a wider contribution to local sustainable development.
We will work with established suppliers and collaborate with partners with shared values.
We will operate based on addressing the greatest need, and not be influenced by bias or favouritism.
